Recording the section working titled “Heavy Part”.

So, I’ve written about this major project I’ve got going on, without really explaining what it is.

I think it’s time to do that!

It all started with a song i had, which had a nice chorus and some other cool stuff, but i felt the style was a bit too pop and 80’s sounding. I took the best bits and made a new song, more heavy and rocking, some parts sounded better and some parts didn’t sound as good as the original.

From there, I decided to make a longer piece of music, where i could elaborate on the parts, with different variations and in different styles/genres. Instead of having the same lyrics sung over 100 different variations of a chorus, i figured this thing needed to go somewhere, have a story. The idea of a concept album came up, yet i didn’t want to get weighed down with the notion that i HAD to write lots of “stories” about someone or something and be bound to that single thing.

what i came up with as a concept was the process of falling asleep and dreaming.

Because one dream can be vastly different from the next and sometimes, one dream evolves into another.

That way i can write about whatever i want lyrically, but still have an underlying concept. I’m still telling a story, starting before my character falls asleep, to the dreams he has, a nightmare maybe, to the point where he wakes up. I’m also making sure that the music helps glue everything together, with motifs and themes that evolve over the course of the album.

I’m not done yet, there’s a lot more to write and even more to record!

I’ll update ya soon!

Quick Update!

Yo. Most guitars are done, starting with synths today. I’ll work on getting some video up as soon as possible!

Monday was spent doing this:

Doesn’t that look cozy!

What i also did was turn the cab around so it faced the wall.

‘Tis much quieter now, I’m pleased!

What I’m listening to

I thought I’d post some of what I’m listening to for inspiration for the recording session next week. I’m mostly obsessing over guitar sounds, hoping to get the thickest, most rocking tone out of my newly acquired Carvin X100B Head.

So let’s get to it!

I love J.E.W! as far as I’m concerned, Clarity and Bleed American are some of the best rock albums of all time!

Bleed American in particular as some very nice, thick guitar tones that I’ve been trying to recreate for years!

You can say what you want about Nickelback, but they have amazing production on their albums and some kick-ass guitars!

From American punk rock and Canadian rock to Norwegian classic rock! The guitar sound on this album and the 2 albums before it is pretty much the perfect heavy guitar sound if you ask me!

This is one of my newest discoveries. After watching a load of Youtuber Rob Chapman and Anderton’s gear reviews, i came across Rob’s band Dorje. I love their sound, they have this nice blend of groovy riffs and heavy breakdowns, without the über-heavy vocals and blastbeats. I’m also loving the 40-min “making of” video from the recording of their new EP,

Hench as …..!

One thing they did, which i haven’t really experimented with, is to double or triple-track guitars, as in layering 2-3 different tones for each rhythm guitar. Now, this is nothing new, i know, but i was really inspired by the way they did it!

So, that’s what I’m using to, hopefully, stoke the flames of creativity and productivity into a massive inferno of goodness!

Finnstun out!!

Yo! Just a quick update after a looooong time without posting. My big project at the time is this concept-album-thing I’ve been working on for the last year (or thereaboutz), i did some demoing last summer (2013) and fleshed out some major parts, but didn’t really finish anything. Since then I’ve been focusing on 2-3 parts/sections/songs that I now know are ready to be recorded and done with. so that’s what I’m going to do next week (Feb 17. to the 23.)

I’ll do my best to film a whole lot and try to be as in-depth as possible concerning gear, sounds, mics and all that good stuff.

Some stuff from the pre-production of my concept thingy, hope you like!!

So, I’m writing this concept piece/thingy! The plan is a 20 min epic with EVERYTHING! acoustic stuff, electric stuff, heavy stuff, quiet stuff, solos, vocals and maybe even some choral music!! I’m in the middle of fleshing stuff out, arranging and demo’ing everything. I WILL FILM SOMETHING THIS TIME!! Hopefully I’ll start recording in June, playing everything myself and maybe get some guest vocalists on board. hopefully I’ll have some small snippet of film for ya soon!

I’m done!

It’s been an interesting journey with lots of frustration, not knowing where to take things, figuring out chords and melodies, making it interesting enough and so on. It’s not perfect, but that was part of the plan. I wanted something a little more raw and old school. Usually i favor more of a”polished” production style (TOTO/Steely Dan-ish) and i had the urge to sweeten things, brighten this, compress that, but NOT THIS TIME. I think i achieved that somewhat. i listened to certain artists to get ideas, like Bill Withers, D’Angelo, Bernhoft. This also marks my one year on this blog, if you remember, my first post was last year’s Christmas project

So, i hope you all enjoy and comment if you like

Yesterday was the last day of recording, everything is done and now comes that glorious last part of the process which is mixing! hopefully I’ll get it done today.

And so, as the sun shines through my bedroom window on this cloudless winter day

let mixing commence!!
