I Just finished writing and recording a new song! It’s called “The Blue Horizon”. I got the title from James Taylor’s 1971 album Mud Slide Slim and The Blue Horizon. I quite liked “The Blue Horizon” as a phrase and wanted to use it somewhere and this new song worked well with it. The music evolved from an acoustic guitar riff in 7/8, the riff ended up as a kind of interlude, kicking off the heavy parts. It’s also more riff-oriented than some of my previous songs. I usually let the keys carry the main motif while the guitars are more chord-based and full-sounding. This time i took inspiration from some 90’s albums by Dream Theater (Images And Words) and SAGA (The Security Of Illusion) and made the guitars more riff-based and well, cool. There’s also a lot of synth solos and instrumental sections (blame SAGA for that!). I had a neat idea lyrically; The blue horizon I saw as the start of a new day, literary, and the verses describe waiting for daylight and a new day during the night. The 3 verses also have 3 different perspectives of how this is experienced:
1. Verse: calm, waiting with patience.
2. Verse: more neurotic and negative.
3. Verse: can’t wait, runs out to get it (more or less)
the choruses are all lyrically different as well and what a pain that was! having finally one good chorus recorded, i thought “that’s done, hooray! Forgetting that the last 2 choruses are in 4/4, while the others are in a combination of 4/4 and 7/8. That was a lot of writing and singing and rewriting and re-singing. Luckily, I’m now done and all that remains is the mixing, which i will undertake shortly!
